Image was misidentified for many years as a portrait of Zora Neale Hurston due to handwritten note on back of photo "Zora Hurston? Florida, 1935." (Source: Valerie Boyd, Wrapped in Rainbows, p. 437).

Photo probably taken during the Lomax-Hurston-Barnicle recording expedition to Georgia, Florida, and the Bahamas.
